BRE INVESTIGATES THE 'TROUBLE WITH LICHEN'
An account is given of the work being undertaken at the Building Research Establishment Princes Risborough Laboratory, in connection with lichen attack on concrete. It is thought that under suitable conditions the rate of lichen growth depends on the quality of the substrate and thus it may be possible to gauge the condition of concrete. A brief description is given of the methods involved including the study of sample panels of concrete and bridges on the M1 motorway. Attempts are also being made to devise more effective treatment and preventative measures for lichen growth on concrete and masonry. /TRRL/
