VANCOUVER SKYTRAIN MK II VEHICLE INTRODUCTION
The population of Vancouver, Canada has increased dramatically during the last decade, up a full 25% since 1991, to nearly two million people. The city implemented an efficient, modern, elevated urban transit system, SkyTrain, in 1986. This paper looks at the second phase of the SkyTrain Millennium Line that entered revenue service in August 2002. This paper describes the new MK II vehicle that was introduced at that time. Discussed are some of the challenges of introducing a new generation vehicle without interruptions to revenue service and the processes employed for launching and integrating the MK II vehicle within the existing system. The paper summarizes the first year of the MK II vehicle operation along with its positive impact on the SkyTrain system.
