A GIS-METHOD TO CALCULATE ACCESSIBILITY BY CAR, BUS, CYCLE, AND FOOT

This paper describes a GIS-based system developed by the author to analyze different users' accessibility to facilities in actual walkway, bikeway, public transit, and automobile networks. The focus is on standard setting user groups (children, the elderly, and the disabled) in Swedish traffic policy as well as on women and their assumed needs concerning safety, security, and comfort on pedestrian and bicycle networks. Travel time between origins and destinations of free choice, selected from among real estate coordinates in a town, can then be calculated. Using these models it becomes possible to determine travel time quotients between the 4 modes of travel with origin and destination of free choice among the real estate coordinates. The method is shown to be a useful tool to perform accessibility analyses in detail, to form the basis of decisionmaking on traffic policy issues, and also highlights the need for operational knowledge about the relations between street design and users' safety and security.
