EXPRESSWAYS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE SURROUNDING REGION. THE CHUGOKU EXPRESSWAY AND THE CHUGOKU REGION

Three transportation routes through the Chugoku region of Japan from Kinai to Dazaifu form the main transportation systems through the area. These are known as the San'in route, running parallel to the Japan sea coast, the San'yo route running parallel to the inland sea coast, and the inland sea water transportation route. The author describes these three routes, and explains how of the four highways planned for the region, construction of the Chugoku expressway was given priority. Some sections are already opened to traffic, and this article focusses attention on the expressway in order to examine the influences exerted on the Chugoku region by the construction of expressways. Construction was begun in 1966, and this 536.6km expressway passes through 6 prefectures and 62 cities, towns and villages. The anticipated date for completion and opening to traffic of the entire expressway is 1979. /TRRL/
