The article describes some of the problems encountered in recent tunnelling contracts for the provision of services at relatively shallow depths over distances of some 20 km through primary and secondary series sedimentary rocks underlying urban residential, business, and industrial property. Many of the solutions have been achieved by somewhat subjective means. This is in part due to the essentially variable nature of British sedimentary rocks, particularly where weathering, glacial disturbance, and mining settlement have modified and distorted the original structure. /TRRL/
