FTA MODEL TRANSIT BUS SAFETY AND SECURITY PROGRAM: PROGRAM ELEMENTS AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY
In October 2000, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) began developing a Model Transit Bus Safety and Security Program in cooperation with other federal agencies, as well as several non-profit transit-oriented entities. The FTA Model Program, described in this article, establishes a set of elements for a transit bus safety and security program inclusive of the oversight function, and relies on a voluntary approach to implementation and assessment of transit provider compliance with Program requirements. This voluntary approach to implementation requires good faith efforts on the part of all stakeholders to meet the Model Program objectives of continuing improvement in transit bus safety and security for transit bus providers of all orders of size and structure.
