IMPACT OF TRANSIT CAD/AVL SYSTEM ON DISPATCHERS: A BEFORE & AFTER STUDY
Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) and Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) systems have become proven means of providing great benefits to transit agencies and their customers. Although studies on the benefits of these systems are numerous, they have for the most part been confined to looking at route and schedule adherence, safety issues, operator schedule tracking, and management. This paper describes a before and after analysis conducted to determine the impact of a CAD/AVL system on the day-to-day operations of transit dispatchers. The study was performed on dispatchers at the Central Ohio Transit Authority in Columbus, Ohio, which operates 350 fixed-route vehicles on 68 routes. The research detailed herein reveals surprising, positive results of the new CAD/AVL system on dispatching operations.
