STARDUST: A RESEARCH ON DEPLOYMENT OF URBAN SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
The objective of this paper is to discuss the problems to be solved with regards to STARDUST. All European cities beyond a certain size are facing the same issues; air pollution, noise, congestion, management of waste, infrastructure maintenance, building maintenance, safety, viability of economic activities and protection of employment. 80 % of Europeans live in cities experiencing growing traffic pollution and congestion and almost forty millions Europeans are exposed to pollution exceeding at least one air quality guideline every year. In addition to health and environmental implications, growing traffic trends also have an economic cost, with congestion costing the EU% of its GNP.
