FLOWING CONCRETE

Although all fresh concrete shows various degrees of fluidity, a concrete having the ability to flow with minimum effort offers greater flexibility when considering the placing of concrete. Flowing concrete is formed by the addition of a superplasticiser to conventional mixes. Such additives can be used in two ways - (1) in place of water to give normal fluidity with increased strength, and (2) as an addition to a mix with an initial workability of 50-100 mm to produce a fully flowing concrete. The high workability of flowing concrete is useful in reinforced structures as it will flow around the steel with the minimum of vibration while avoiding the possibility of honeycombing. /TRRL/
