THE ROLE OF FHWA IN IN-VEHICLE GUIDANCE INFORMATION AND WARNINGS
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is responsible for publishing the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which is the standard for external traffic control devices installed on streets and highways open for public travel. An increasing amount of historically external driving information is being presented to drivers through in-vehicle sources. The FHWA appreciates the contribution that technology can make to provide effective in-vehicle information systems. There is a perceived need for uniformity and consistency between the external and in-vehicle information overlap to reduce the potential to distract and confuse drivers, leading to errors and crashes. The FHWA can play a significant role in establishing guidelines and best practices for implementing in-vehicle information systems to bridge the gap between the existing MUTCD and evolving in-vehicle guidance and warning information systems. There is also a need to clarify and coordinate roles.
