DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE CRITERIA FOR IMPROVED SKID RESISTANCE OF ROADS

A lack of skid resistance is not generally considered a problem in South Africa. Accident statistics, however, indicate that this problem does exist, especially when the road is wet. Frequently the problem can be eliminated during the design, construction or maintenance phases at relatively low costs. This paper discusses aspects which should be considered at each of these stages during the life of a road and proposes possible preventative and remedial measures. /Author/
