WELDABLE HIGH TENSILE STRENGTH STEELS AND LOW-TEMPERATURE STEELS IN SHIPBUILDING FOR HULL, TANKS AND PRESSURE VESSELS

ACCIAI AD ELEVATA RESISTENZA SALDABILI ED ACCIAI PER IMPIEGHI A BASSA TEMPERATURA, IN COSTRUZIONE NAVALE, PER SCAFO, CISTERNE E RECIPIENTI A PRESSIONE

The use in shipbuilding of high tensile strength steels for hull structures has been introduced by illustrating the types of steels considered by the Rules of one Classification Society, their relevant properties, the present application and trend. The governing criteria for the settlement of the properties required by the concerned steels have been indicated and are mainly those affecting scantling, design, workmanship. Notch toughness requirements of base metal and welded joints have been discussed at length. The requirements are based on Charpy V notch impact tests and also if this kind of test is subject to criticism there is not at present alternative tests which could substitute it on large scale tests. The figures of energy required for HTS steels are examined in comparison with those of mild steels already validated by years of experience and with suggested figures related to the C.O.D. approach and with the assumption of a preexisting crack of length twice the thickness. Weldability is in particular examined under the aspect of cold cracking.
