QUALITY CONTROL METHODS FOR SCU PRODUCTION

A method is described for determining total coating weight and dissolution rate which are basic quality control indicators. The Method can be completed in one-half hour or less. The utilization of a microwave oven to dry the filter and residue from a slurried, weighed sulfur-coated (SCU) sample is described as well as the development of an evaluation procedure that involves continuous agitation of slurries of SCU samples in a mist-action shaker for hours. Another test that was developed was the "dip" method in which samples of SCU were placed in wire bags and dipped in warm water a few times a minute. The procedure developed at TVA involves the use of ultrasonic energy to decrease the time required for the controlled release of urea from the coated granules.
