SHUTTLE TANKER RADAR DETECTION TRIALS AND RSI4000-RT-8/12 DEVELOPMENT

This report describes research into radar-based iceberg detection aboard a tanker that shuttles between an offshore oil platform and coastal terminals. The first phase consisted of field trials aboard the tanker M.T. Kometik operating from the Hibernia platform to the east coast. The objective of the trials was to investigate the operational iceberg detection capability of an advanced modular radar interface with a high-speed radar scanner. In the second phase, a new radar interface card known as the RSi400-RT-8/12 was developed and tested. The card was designed to overcome many of the shortcomings of the radar interface hardware used with the MRI and provides 12-bit high dynamic radar video data for improved detection performance. The report focusses on the second phase and includes description of the design approach, fabrication, MRI integration, and data capture rates achieved.
