CONTRA-FLOW EXCLUSIVE EXPRESS BUS LANES: THE OTTAWA RIVER PARKWAY EXPERIENCE

The Ottawa River Parkway is a four lane divided roadway under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government and administered by the National Capital Commission. Its use is restricted to automobiles, with commercial vehicles and buses prohibited. However during peak hours two lanes on the parkway on which traffic flows are counter to the dominant direction of travel are reserved for OC Transp buses, operating two-way. The author describes this situation, comments on its impact on the transportation network and outlines its cost.
