FUNDING THE RAILWAYS - LOOKING YEARS AHEAD - 1: SETTING THE SCENE
This report was commissioned by the Rail Passengers Council in October 2001 as the first in a series of two examining the long-term prospects for and funding of the British railway system. This first report provides a background of current financing against which future prospects and funding can be examined in context. Reform of British railway organisations and structure; recent funding systems; railway performance; passenger and freight growth prospects; the funding implications of railway growth; the economic case for rail; and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project are reviewed.
