TECHNIQUES FOR THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF BRIDGE DECKS

Bridge deck deterioration is now a major problem for highway authorities in all areas of North America where de-icing salts are used. Deterioration has become more acute in recent years because of the adoption of a bare pavement policy which requires that roads and bridges be kept free from ice and snow during the winter months for safety reasons. The purpose of this paper is to outline the mechanism of corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete and to review the alternative techniques available for the construction and restoration of bridge decks in the light of existing technology.
