THE RENOVATION OF THE NORTH VIADUCT OF LIONS' GATE BRIDGE

The Lions' Gate was originally operated as a two lane bridge. The design live load did take account of the future possibility of three lanes of traffic, but the intensity of loading was considerably below today's minimum design values. Total traffic usage during the first year of operation was about 1 million vehicles. Present traffic volumes average just under two million vehicles per month. This paper is concerned with the effects of time and traffic on the bridge and suggestions of methods and materials necessary for renovation.
