STRUCTURAL TESTING OF BRIDGE COLUMNS RETROFIT WITH SHOTCRETE CONFINEMENT : FINAL REPORT TO THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

The objective of this research was to investigate the seismic performance and suitability of shotcrete as a means of retrofitting ridge columns for improved flexural ductility and shear strength. The seismic performance and suitability of reinforced shotcrete jackets was compared with cast-in-place concrete jackets and the confinement effectiveness of the outer jackets was assessed. The performance of eight 40% reduced scale bridge column samples was studied under unidirectional reversed cyclic lateral loading. Four of the columns were tested in single curvature, or cantilever bending mode, and the other four were tested in double curvature,or shear bending mode. Results indicate that the performance of the shotcrete jacket retrofitted columns was satisfactory and on par with the other jacketed columns. The jacketing measures enhanced shear capacity and provided efficient confinement of the plastic hinge regions without any significant distress to the jackets.
