DESIGNING ROADWAYS TO SAFELY ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASINGLY MOBILE OLDER DRIVER: A PLAN TO ALLOW OLDER AMERICANS TO MAINTAIN THEIR INDEPENDENCE
This report looks at aging drivers, their safety behind the wheel, their mobility and tendency to keep driving as they get older, and the improvements to roads that might make it easier for them to drive safely. It discusses traffic accident fatalities among older drivers, presents the state of Florida as a model in offering many roadway improvements to increase the safety of older drivers, and discusses in detail improvements that could improve traffic safety of older drivers. These improvements are broken down into three categories - signs and lighting, intersections, and streets and highways.
