JOURNEY-TO-WORK IN THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION COUNCIL (NYMTC) AREA AND THE SURROUNDING TRI-STATE METROPOLITAN REGION (NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, AND CONNECTICUT)

The purpose of this report is to present analyses of changes in trip-to-work patterns in the tri-state metropolitan region (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) between the 1980 and 1990 decennial census. The "tri-state region" geographic area is comprised of the 10 counties (New York, Bronx, Kings, Richmond, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam) of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC), plus Orange and Dutchess counties in New York, nine counties in New Jersey (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Union), and six planning regions in Connecticut (Central Naugatuck, Greater Bridgeport, Housatonic Valley, South Central, South Western, and Valley. Also, some comparisons to other state metropolitan areas and the United States were made. In the 1990 Decentennial Census, the transportation modes available were as follows: car/truck/van (drive alone and carpool for two to 10 or more persons), bus or trolley bus, street car/trolley car (not applicable in NYMTC region), subway, railroad, ferryboat, taxicab, motorcycle, bicycle, walk, work at home, and other means (where the primary mode of travel is not identified).
