APPLICATIONS OF POURBAIX DIAGRAMS IN CORROSION SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

This review paper details the applications of Pourbaix (potential-pH) diagrams in corrosion science and engineering. The construction, features and limitations of potential-pH diagrams is initially described. Mention is made of the associated stability diagrams which determine the solubility of compounds as a function of ionic concentration and pH. Various examples for the use of potential-pH diagrams, selected from a wide area of corrosion science and engineering are finally described. These include concrete reinforcement corrosion, environmental cracking, dealloying, water supply corrosion, marine corrosion and atmospheric corrosion. The contributions of Marcel Pourbaix, the inventor of potential-pH diagrams, to corrosion science and engineering are included.
