A hillside fill is stabilized by the construction of drilled reinforced concrete caissons. The fill supports a building which houses equipment important to a manufacturing process. Other methods of supporting the building or stabilizing the hill were considered but were not found feasible. The caissons were analyzed for cantilever moment resistance by the transformed section method. Any required future caissons will be designed by the ultimate strength method. The drilling was done with a drilling machine using a 3 foot (0.915 m) diameter auger type caisson drill. The concrete was pumped into the holes using a "pumped" concrete design mix. To resist the very high lateral forces that can develop in a fill as described, the author concludes that the installation of caissons is the best solution.
