A COMPARISON OF OPTIMISATION FORMULATIONS IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT SUBSIDY
This paper focuses on the user economies of scale argument for public transport subsidy using buses as an illustrative mode. The aim is to present and interrelate user economies of scale analysis for a number of constraint cases--namely cases where load factor and/or bus size are fixed or variable--and consider how subsidy and other optimal results vary between constraint cases. The various constraint cases are compared through simulation results and presented graphically. The relationship with previous graphical presentations of the user economies of scale problem is also considered in an attempt to better integrate and relate previous analyses.
