SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS, LAND USE AND TRAVEL PATTERNS OF MEXICO CITY
Over the years 1940-2000, Mexico City changed from a large city with a population of 1 million to a teeming megalopolis of 17 million. The metropolitan area extends across 2 distinct, self-governing administrative districts: the Federal District and the State of Mexico. While these 2 areas are part of the same urban region, they have different policies and resources and different standards, costs, and varieties of transport. This paper provides an overview of the socioeconomic and land use elements, road networks, travel patterns, and modes of travel for the greater Mexico City metropolitan area.
