CALTRANS SEEKS CONGESTION RELIEF WITH MANAGED LANES IN SAN DIEGO
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has secured approximately $150 million of the estimated $535 million needed to construct 20 mi (32 km) of managed lanes on Interstate 15 in San Diego County. The four additional lanes would be constructed in the median and no new rights-of-way would be necessary. The lanes, which would have movable barriers so that three of the four lanes could be used in one direction during peak hours, would be reserved for buses and high-occupancy vehicles. Any excess capacity would be sold to single-occupancy vehicles with the aid of electronic toll collectors. The main challenge of the project is moving overpass bridge piers that are located in the middle of the median. In some cases, entire bridges will have to be rebuilt.
