FORETELL: INTEGRATING INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS) WITH ADVANCED WEATHER PREDICTION
Nearly 6600 fatal accidents in the U.S. (over 3900 in rural areas) occur annually during inclement weather. In addition, 402,000 injury crashes occur nationwide, with one-third happening in rural areas. In order to maintain the roads, detailed road and weather condition information is required, but has not been available until now. The FORETELL (trademark) Program initiative, brought forth by a public-private partnership between several mid-western U.S. states, the Federal Highway Administration and the private partner lead, Castle Rock Services, seeks to address these needs. This paper will examine the needs of transportation agencies for detailed road and weather information and how FORETELL (trademark) will meet these needs.
