RAILWAY SAFETY IN CANADA, 1987-1997
Accidents in the air and rail modes receive extensive coverage in the media, certainly compared with the attention given to the much larger number of accidents on the roads. Air and road safety also receive much analytical attention in the form of research studies, but rail transport tends to be overlooked in this regard. This paper attempts to help redress this imbalance in transport safety analysis. It discusses the following topics: Canadian Government Regulation of Railway Safety, Canadian Railway Accident Statistics, Government Railway Safety Organization, Performance Standards, Streamlining the Administration of Railway Safety, and Railway Freedom to Manage Operations Efficiently and Safely.
