ALLIANCES IN THE AIRLINE MARKET: AN EMPIRICAL PERSPECTIVE
The implementation of deregulation processes in major airline markets (US, Canada, Australia and Europe) and the inherent, slow path of liberalization in the entire industry, have led to focused competitive answers to match newly established rules of conduct. One of the most prominent and clear trends has dealt with alliance agreements signed by pairs or groups of carriers. They have basically permitted the constitution of "seamless" integrated networks between medium-sized and large partners. This paper deals with the analysis and discussion of the main types of alliances in the airline industry, on the basis of an empirical research concerning all major competitors.
