THE CAPRICORN CARRIER

The vessel is to be used in conjunction with LASH operations and will save shipowners one in three trans-Atlantic round trips, the designers claim. Capricorn involves the three main types of cargo handling in use today -- roll-on/roll- off, containerization, and barge carrying. Within a year the first keel could be laid and nine months after that the first ship could be in service. Three basic designs are available with gross tonnages of 4,000, 9,000 and 18,000 with capacities for eights, 12 and 26 LASH-type barges respectively. Container capacity on the smaller vessel would be 230 TEU's, 375 on the medium-sized vessel, and 700 on the large ship. There would be 520, 720 and 1,530 lane- meters respectively available for commercial trucks and other wheeled traffic. An illustration of transport costs made by the Netherlands Maritime Institute of Rotterdam, based on the vessel data for the three types proposed is included in the Article.
