HDS is one of CAD systems developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Covering all phases of hull design work from the initial stage to the N/C lofting. In this paper, the features of HDS are shown through the concrete description of its actual application modes. The three salient features of HDS are 1) Speed-up of hull design process through timely presentation of skeleton drawings in the initial design state; 2) Introduction of automated design program in the shell landing design; and 3) Full application of drawing editing function through the incorporation of Drawing File as one principal constituent of the data base. To date, several ships have actually been designed with the full application of HDS, having verified its qualitative as well as quantitative advantages.
