MEASUREMENT, MANAGEMENT AND UTILIZATION OF RUTTING DATA
In response to the increased occurrence of rutting, particularly dual rutting, in 1988 the Ontario Ministry of Transportation started a comprehensive program to measure, manage, and utilize rutting data as part of the pavement management system at both project and network levels. This comprehensive program is described in the paper. The rut depth measurements are performed using an ARAN vehicle which utilizes a smart rut bar with 32 ultrasound sensors and provides an accuracy of about 1 mm. The paper also provides background information regarding hardware and software used for measuring and processing rutting data, information on repeatability and accuracy of measurements, examples of project-level and network-level results, and description of data handling activities including the integration of rut depth measurements within the pavement management system.
