This paper begins by describing the strong and weak points of Tokyo's public transport system from various perspectives together with the technical and institutional practices adopted. Next, the author discusses distinctive features of Tokyo's experience, what problems it faces, and what will be required in the future to accomplish necessary objectives. Finally, recommendations for other large cities are outlined.
