URBAN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM OF SHANGHAI AND ITS OPERATIONS AND USE BY PEOPLE
Shanghai, China, is one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of 13.5 million. Public transportation is the major transit mode used by most of the population. In recent years, major development of public transit has taken place and new development is planned in the future. This paper presents some background about the public transit systems in Shanghai. Statistical data regarding the current and future situations of urban transportation are summarized and discussed. Current challenges and policy issues relevant to public transit are also presented.
