METROCARD: AUTOMATING NEW YORK CITY'S PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM
In January 1994, the New York City Transit Authority introduced automated fare collection to the largest transit system in the world. Known as MetroCard, this system has helped to stabilize ridership and encourage growth. The significant contributions to ridership growth are, in large measure, attributable to the strategies developed for the marketing and sales of MetroCard. A cornerstone of this initiative has been a multi-faceted out-of-system sales strategy. Out-of-system sales have been used to provide convenient, cost effective, customer-friendly distribution of MetroCards to the public. This paper provides an overview of the implementation and marketing of the MetroCard automated fare collection system in the New York Transit System.
