SOCIOECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS, LAND USE AND TRAVEL PATTERNS OF THE HELSINKI METROPOLITAN AREA
The Helsinki Metropolitan Area consists of 4 cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen. Its area is 764 square km with a population of 920,000 inhabitants. This paper discusses population and demographic factors, land use and environmental issues; and transportation terminals, transit destinations, and travel patterns of the greater Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The focus is on the need to promote public transport as an important part of policy for urban transportation and land use planning.
