SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS, LAND USE, AND TRAVEL PATTERNS OF CHENNAI (MADRAS)
Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is considered the gateway to southern India. It is also the capital of Tamil Nadu state and the 4th-largest city in the country. Chennai is a port city with railway and road networks extending in all 3 land directions available for expansion. The city limits comprise an area of 172 square km and the entire metropolitan region covers an area of 1172 square km. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the city of Chennai, and it is divided into 3 broad areas covering socioeconomic characteristics; land use characteristics; and travel characteristics, patterns, and corridors.
