DEFENDING THE STATUS QUO: 'AUTO, PLUS' MEANS MORE CARS AND MORE SPRAWL
This article is a commentary on an earlier piece in this journal by J. Dunn ("Driving Forces," Winter 2000) that discusses the issue of U.S. dependence on automobile driving as a primary means of transportation. The author of this commentary takes the position that Dunn fails to recognize the social and environmental impacts of this dependence on the automobile and endorses no fundamental changes in U.S. transportation policy. The contention is also made that Dunn's recommendations would abandon the enormous progress made in intermodal transport planning over the past 2 decades.
