MAKING BETTER LAMPS BETTER

The author briefly describes the manufacture, testing and performance of cibie z-beam headlamps. Tests showed that the z-beam lamp gave greater curbside range when compared with the normal asymmetric beam, and no glare was produced in the interior mirrors when being overtaken by a car using them. To simulate the effect of fog, the lamp is placed in front of a series of tulle netting curtains with a mesh size equivalent to the size of fog particles. These curtains spaced at 1.5 M intervals represent a visibility of 50-60 M in daylight fog. The author suggests that because of the high cost and vulnerability of headlamps, designers should not adopt unusual and individual shapes. Rectangular, square or trapezoidal shaped headlamps can occupy an amount of space that can considerably increase the vehicle design and production cost. /TRRL/
