REHABILITATION OF RAILWAYS IN LEBANON: STATUS QUO
The rusting tracks of Lebanon's derelict railway network lay silent and overgrown. The trains that used to run along them have not been in operation since the civil war (1975-1990). This situation may now change, for the dynamic new Minister of Transport in the current government would like to see the railway network in operation again. Since Mr. Mikati assumed his responsibilities in 1998, the Ministry of Transport has been studying routes for possible reopening. This article, after first addressing the former railway network layout, looks at the routes considered.
