PRIVATE FLEET COMPETITIVENESS: IS BACKHAULING AN OPPORTUNITY?

In North America, private fleets deliver approximately 54% of total trucking tonnes shipped and account for approximately 47% of general freight revenues. There are increasing pressures for total cost reductions through the logistics process, which includes costs and performance of private fleet operations. The objective of this paper is to review the feasibility of private fleet backhaul operations, and to outline a practical method for initiating a backhaul program. The paper reviews the historical rationale for private fleets, outlines reasons to consider a backhaul program, compares costs and benefits for consideration, and presents an approach to help establish a backhaul program.
