TWO-DIMENSIONALLY NESTED INVENTORY
The inventory model presented in this paper has been developed for passenger railroads but it could be applicable to any means of passenger transportation. The model allows to control the allocation and availability of booking classes that belong to a main reservation class for each itinerary segment "bucket". The itinerary segment bucket is a collection of itinerary segments for which inventory should be controlled together; both booking classes and segment buckets are prioritized and nested under each other according to their respective priorities. This inventory design provides yield management with the ability to control supply and demand of inventory during the reservation process.
