STB HALTS RAIL MERGERS
The Surface Transportation Board declared a 15-month moratorium on rail mergers, stalling the proposed Canadian National-Burlington Northern Santa Fe combine. During that time, neither CN-BNSF nor any other major railroad will be permitted to file applications with the STB. The board will use the moratorium period to develop new rules to govern future rail mergers. The article discusses some of the reaction to the moratorium as well as the possible appeal by CN.
