FINDING OUT ABOUT THE PASSENGERS FOR REVENUE ALLOCATION

Public transit authorities have various reasons to need to know about the travel patterns of their passengers and the distribution of various types of tickets. In the United Kingdom, there are statutory requirements in the large urban areas to reimburse bus and train operators for carrying concessional passengers - children and the elderly and disabled. These requirements demand good quality information about patronage in order to be able to satisfactorily reimburse private operators from public funds. Travel passes and multi journey tickets are also administered, and data on them is required in order to share out ticket sales revenue among the operators. This article describes the system in use in West Yorkshire to obtain the necessary data.
