STRAIGHT DOWN HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD

The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) set out to educate the motoring public on sign vandalism. Working with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), a grant was obtained to produce a 9-minute video. Dubbed "Danger Sings," the tape was distributed to individuals on a "test only" basis and slated for unveiling at ATSSA's Annual Convention and Traffic Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, in February 2000. Numerous success storied involving diverse audiences occurred during the test phase in Washington state. At the Expo, ATSSA set out 600 complimentary copies of "Danger Signs" at the opening general session. After showing the tape, there was not a tape left in the house. "Danger Signs" was soon in every state in the nation, and countless requests began pouring in for the video. In April alone, ATSSA processed nearly 1,300 orders for the video. The FHWA, who also has distributed thousands of copies, was provided a master dub of the tape to meet the continuing demand. ATSSA, with FHWA support, has launched a national educational campaign centered on "Danger Signs." The campaign will include information sheets, educational guides, and other supporting materials for marketing of the video to other associations to help them carry the sign vandalism message even further.
