FACILITY LOCATION AND STAFFING ANALYSIS FOR TRANSALTA UTILITIES
TransAlta Utilities has been a major supplier of electricity to Canadians in Alberta, Canada since 1911. They recently expressed an interest in taking a closer look at their entire delivery system. The Network Services Division of TransAlta Utilities asked the authors to look into the following questions: 1. how many facilities they should have, 2. where these facilities should be located, 3. how many linemen should be assigned to each facility, 4. how should facilities be clustered into call pools for after-hours service delivery, and 5. where the special equipment (bucket and digger trucks) should be located. Each phase of the project is summarized in this paper.
