LONG TERM INPUT TRENDS AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE MEASURES FOR CN AND CP RAIL
This paper draws on portions of the authors' previously developed long term productivity performance measures of CN and CP Rail, to examine some long term financial trends for the two railways. It focuses on capital input trends, their costs, and implications for measures of financial performance. This includes a comparison of capital input use between CN and CP Rail. Of special importance are difference between financial measures based on book values of capital stocks, versus measures based on constant dollar replacement values. The latter is developed from the authors' database.
