MILITARY INTEREST IN LOW-VOLUME ROADS

The military is responsibble for the design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of more than 20,000 miles (32 000 km) of roads in the United States. Military interest in low-volume roads focuses on engineering and operational planning. Engineering interest deals predominantly with designing, constructing, and maintaining roads in an active theater of operations. Operational planning for low-volume roads has to do with assessing road capacity and projected deterioration rate to determine the capability of potentially threatening military forces. An analytical approach was adopted to make the assessment.
