London Transport initiated LT PRESTIGE to develop a new integrated revenue collection service for London's buses and Underground. It has been designed to improve the total experience of travelling in London in the future and to enable London's transport services to work together to offer passengers seamless inter-modal journeys. The core objective of LT PRESTIGE is to make it quicker and easier for LT's customers to pay for travel and use public transport. At the heart of the project is the contactless smartcard which provides a platform for a whole range of initiatives which have the potential to transform user's perceptions of the public transport systems in London. This paper discusses: (1) the development of the infrastructure to support smartcard ticketing; the rationale, objectives and a description of sub-systems and their features; and (2) the role of LT PRESTIGE in the government's initiative to improve integration of public transport in London; development of stored value ticketing, and extending the system to other services (National Railways, taxis); LT's long term vision for PRESTIGE; opportunities beyond travel; electronic purse applications; new/more ways of paying for travel; more sales outlets.
