EUROPE SHRINKS WITH OERESUND LINK OPENING
One of the largest construction projects ever in Europe is being completed in July when the Oeresund link between Denmark and Sweden is officially opened. The project is composed of a 4050 m long submerged tunnel to the 4055 m long artificial island that connects to a 7845 m long, 50-span bridge to complete the 15.8 km Oeresund road and rail link that carries both a highway and railway. This project also marks the creation of a new European region with a population of 3.5 million. Basically, the system consists of regular 20-minute interval services running not only from Copenhagen to Malmo but extending beyond, deep into the region. These will be supplemented by a range of complementary regional and long distance services.
